Review of Muhle Rocca

Post by NoahNature »

The Muhle Rocca Safety Razor is an impressive piece of grooming equipment that combines traditional design with modern materials and precision engineering. As someone who has tried various razors over the years, I was particularly excited to test out Muhle's first double-edge safety razor made entirely of stainless steel. Here’s my comprehensive review after using the Rocca for several months.

First off, the design and build quality of the Rocca stands out immediately. The razor has a solid feel, yet the hollow stainless steel handle keeps the weight manageable at just 60g. The handle’s matte black honeycomb structure is not only aesthetically pleasing but also offers an excellent grip, even with wet hands. At 95mm long and 14mm in diameter, the handle feels well-balanced and comfortable to hold.

One of the key highlights is how the head of the razor is engineered. The chamfered corners and rounded edges, along with its low profile, make it easy to shave under the nose and around sideburns. The blade alignment mechanism is precise, thanks to the raised slots inside the top plate that hold the blade securely. This attention to detail ensures that the blade sits perfectly every time, making the loading and unloading process a breeze.

In terms of performance, the Rocca excels in providing a close, smooth shave. Its design places it halfway between the Muhle R89, known for its mildness, and the more aggressive R41. Therefore, the Rocca leans towards the aggressive side, requiring a lighter touch than milder razors. It effortlessly glides over the skin and handles both short stubble and longer hairs with ease. Most of the time, I only need two passes to achieve a near-perfect shave.

That said, the aggressiveness of the Rocca means it might not be ideal for everyone as a daily driver—particularly for those with sensitive skin. However, for those who appreciate a close shave and can manage a more aggressive blade exposure, it's a fantastic option. It performs exceptionally well with a variety of blades, including Astra SP and Feather, though I found the Muhle blade to be less effective compared to others.

The overall fit and finish of the razor are quite remarkable. The satin or slightly matte finish gives the Rocca an elegant and premium feel. The honeycomb pattern on the handle adds a modern twist to the classic knurling found on traditional safety razors. While some might find the tolerances not as tight as expected, I didn’t experience any functional issues.

Pros:
- Stunning design with excellent grip
- High-quality stainless steel construction
- Precise blade alignment
- Provides a close and smooth shave
- Well-balanced and comfortable to hold

Cons:
- More aggressive than some other safety razors, which might not suit everyone
- Muhle blades may not be the best choice for optimal performance
- Tolerances could be tighter for some users' preferences

In conclusion, the Muhle Rocca Safety Razor is a top-tier grooming tool that offers a unique shaving experience. Its blend of modern materials and traditional design makes it a great addition to any shaving kit. While its aggressiveness might be a drawback for some, those who appreciate a close, efficient shave will find the Rocca to be worth every penny. The range of variations, including the wood handle and Jet Series, also offer something for everyone, ensuring that this razor can cater to different tastes and needs. Overall, it's a solid investment for anyone serious about their shaving routine.
