Review of Parker Variant

Post by TylerTravels »

I recently had the opportunity to try out the Parker Variant Adjustable Double Edge Safety Razor, and I must say, it left quite an impression on me. As someone who's always on the lookout for a shaving tool that offers both versatility and performance, I found the Parker Variant to be an intriguing option worth exploring.

First and foremost, this razor boasts a host of features designed to enhance the shaving experience. The adjustable blade exposure, controlled by a turn of the dial, allows users to customize the shave aggressiveness to their preference. This is a boon, especially for those with varying skin sensitivity or those who maintain different lengths of facial hair. The razor is compatible with all standard double edge safety razor blades, giving users the flexibility to choose their favorite blades, which can further impact the shave quality.

One of the standout aspects of the Parker Variant is its construction. It features a hefty 4-inch electroplated brass handle, which feels substantial in hand and weighs in at 110 grams. This weighty feel adds to the overall sense of control and precision during use. The handle itself is designed with extra knurling, offering a secure and non-slip grip even when your hands are wet or slippery. I found the ridged adjustment knob at the bottom to be particularly useful for dialing in the precise setting, ranging from mild (1) to aggressive (5).

In terms of aesthetics, the Parker Variant is available in both Satin Chrome and Black finishes. While the satin finish might tend to drag more compared to the smooth chrome finish seen in other razors like the Merkur Progress, it still maintains an air of sophistication. Personally, I found the satin chrome to be quite appealing and didn't experience significant issues with drag.

Using the razor was an overall pleasant experience. The adjustment feature allows for great control over the shave aggressiveness. Starting with a milder setting and adjusting as needed provided a comfortable and close shave. The razor's weight and balance contribute to an effortless glide, allowing for longer strokes and a faster shave without the need to apply excessive pressure.

However, it's worth noting that the Parker Variant may require occasional cleaning to prevent soap and lather buildup, which can affect performance. Assembly also requires attention to align the head and arrow on the handle correctly. While this isn't a dealbreaker, it does add a bit of a learning curve for beginners. Speaking of beginners, the forgiving design of this razor makes it perfect for both novice shavers and seasoned experts alike.

One area where the Parker Variant truly excels is in addressing common issues found in other adjustable razors. For instance, compared to the Merkur Progress, the Variant features a longer and heavier handle, better weight distribution, and a metal adjustment knob instead of plastic. These improvements make a noticeable difference in overall performance and durability. However, some users have reported issues with the black finish coming off, which could be a concern for those opting for the black variant.

In conclusion, the Parker Variant Adjustable Double Edge Safety Razor offers a blend of adjustability, quality construction, and user-friendly features that make it a strong contender in the world of safety razors. It allows for a customized shave experience, caters to different blade preferences, and provides a close and comfortable shave with minimal irritation. While it does have a few minor drawbacks, such as the potential for finish wear and the need for occasional maintenance, the overall benefits far outweigh these concerns. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned shaving enthusiast, the Parker Variant is certainly worth considering for your grooming routine.
