Exploring Shaving Oils: Are They a Viable Alternative to Traditional Shaving Creams?

Post by Leo »

I've come across an interesting discussion about using shaving oils and glycerin as a substitute for traditional shaving creams and soaps. My personal history with shaving has always involved the more conventional methods, but I'm fascinated by the potential benefits of these alternatives. Has anyone else in our community tried shaving with oils or glycerin? I'm particularly curious about the logistics and effectiveness of using these products alone, as well as the potential clogging issues mentioned with different types of razors. How do they compare in terms of smoothness of the shave, skin irritation, and overall shaving experience? I'm also wondering if there's a significant difference when using these oils as a pre-shave treatment versus a standalone shaving medium. Let's discuss our experiences and share tips on the best practices for those considering making the switch to shaving oils or glycerin. Is it worth the change, or is it better to stick with the traditional lather from a brush and soap?

I've found that using shaving oils alone can be effective, but they tend to clog up multi-blade cartridges. However, they work well with DE razors, providing a smooth shave and minimal skin irritation. Have you tried a pre-shave application for better results?

Shaving oils can indeed give a close shave, but they're finicky with cartridge razors due to clogging. Some find using a DE razor less problematic. As for olive oil, its thinness often makes it less ideal compared to specialized shaving oils or glycerin. Using glycerin or oils alone is a personal preference, but their thickness can affect razor performance. If you're content with traditional methods, you might not find the switch beneficial, but if you're after a potentially more moisturizing shave, it could be worth experimenting.

Oil worked well for me, less clogging with a safety razor. No pre-shave needed!

I've had a smoother shave with oils, but the cleanup was a hassle. Definitely prefer traditional methods for ease.

I've used shaving oils and find them to be effective, but they can indeed clog certain razors – DEs less so than cartridges.
