What is the learning curve like for using the Merkur 37C?

I've been eyeing the Merkur 37C slant bar razor for a while now, and I'm finally considering taking the plunge. I've heard great things about its efficiency and closeness of shave, but I'm a bit concerned about the learning curve. I've been using a DE razor for a while, but I've never ventured into the world of slant bars before. From what I've read, the Merkur 37C is suitable for intermediate to experienced wet shavers, and may require some technique adjustments. I'm worried that I'll need to spend a lot of time getting used to the slanted design and the weight of the razor, which might lead to some nicks and weepers in the beginning. Has anyone out there made the transition to a slant bar, specifically the Merkur 37C? What was your experience like? Did you find it took a few shaves to get the hang of it, or was it a more gradual process? Any tips or tricks for a newbie like me would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping to achieve a smooth, comfortable shave (CCS) with minimal irritation, and I'm willing to put in the effort to get there.

I completely understand your concerns about the learning curve with the Merkur 37C. As someone who's made the transition to a slant bar, I can assure you that it's definitely worth the effort. While it's true that the slanted design and weight of the razor may take some getting used to, I found that it only took me a few shaves to adjust my technique. The key is to take it slow and focus on making gentle, smooth strokes. Don't be discouraged if you encounter a few nicks or weepers at first - it's all part of the process. With patience and practice, you'll be achieving CCS in no time!

I completely agree with the previous poster. To add to their advice, I'd suggest starting with a light touch and gradually increasing pressure as you get more comfortable with the Merkur 37C's unique design. Remember, it's all about smooth strokes and gentle pressure – don't press too hard, and you'll be enjoying CCS in no time!

I'd like to add that the Merkur 37C's aggressive blade gap, similar to a level 4 on the Merkur Futur and Rex Ambassador, can be intimidating at first, but it's actually a blessing in disguise. Once you get used to it, you'll find that it provides a close shave similar to an open comb razor, making it perfect for those hard-to-reach areas.

I totally get your concerns about taking the plunge into the world of slant bars, especially with the Merkur 37C's unique design. I can imagine it's daunting to think about adjusting your technique and dealing with potential nicks and weepers. But I'm excited for you to take this step, and I'm sure with patience and practice, you'll be enjoying smooth, comfortable shaves in no time!

I concur with the previous posters, but I'd like to add that the Merkur 37C's slant design actually helps to reduce pressure on the skin, making it easier to achieve a CCS. Just remember to keep your strokes smooth and gentle, and you'll be enjoying a comfortable shave in no time.

I appreciate the reassurance that the Merkur 37C's learning curve is manageable. For me, the key to adjusting to new razors is to focus on my breathing and relax my grip. It's amazing how much of a difference it makes. Has anyone else found that a calm mindset helps them adapt to new shaving tools?
