Review of Feather Asd2

Post by Dominic25 »

The Feather AS-D2 is a beautifully engineered safety razor that has quickly become a staple in my daily shaving routine. Made in Japan, this razor exudes quality and precision from the moment you hold it in your hand. Designed by the renowned Feather Safety Razor Company, which has been producing high-quality shaving products since 1932, the AS-D2 promises an exceptional shaving experience for both beginners and seasoned wet shavers.

One look at the Feather AS-D2 and you can tell it's a premium product. The razor boasts an elegant satin finish that adds a touch of luxury to its fully stainless steel construction. The razor measures 98mm (3.9 inches) in length and weighs a substantial 3.2 ounces (90 grams), giving it a sense of heft and balance that provides great control during use. The handle, which is 90mm long, features a straight design with a diamond-patterned knurled texture that ensures a secure grip, even when wet.

Performance-wise, the Feather AS-D2 is known for being one of the mildest double-edge safety razors on the market. It is ideal for daily shavers and those with sensitive skin. The precision tolerances and advanced blade centering design make for an incredibly smooth and comfortable shave. When paired with Feather blades, the razor truly shines, providing a close, irritation-free shave every time. It's worth noting that using the AS-D2 requires a slight adjustment in technique; the optimal shaving angle seems to be around 45 degrees to the face, which is shallower than most other razors.

In terms of user experience, the AS-D2 excels in shaving tight spots like around the chin and ears. Its mild nature means that it's highly unlikely to cause nicks or cuts, making it a forgiving option for those prone to such mishaps. Post-shave, there's no sting when using an alum block or witch hazel splash, which speaks volumes about the gentle yet effective nature of the razor.

However, the AS-D2 isn't without its drawbacks. While its mildness is a boon for sensitive skin, it may not be suitable for those with very thick or fast-growing hair. Some users might find that it requires more blade exposure than they are used to, and not all blades pair well with this razor. While Feather blades are the perfect match, other blades like Astra SP and Personna blue have also been reported to work well.

The durability of the Feather AS-D2 is another major plus. Being made entirely of stainless steel, this is a razor that will last a lifetime with proper care. It’s also economical and eco-friendly, reducing the need for disposable cartridges.

On the downside, the price point is relatively high, with the AS-D2 alone costing USD $169. For the AS-D2S, which includes a stand and five blades, the price jumps to USD $310. Some might find this a bit steep, especially considering the razor's mild nature might not cater to all beard types.

In conclusion, the Feather AS-D2 is a top-tier safety razor that delivers on its promises of quality, durability, and performance. Its luxurious design and mild shave make it a perfect choice for daily shavers and those with sensitive skin. While it might not be ideal for everyone, particularly those with thicker hair, its ease of use and forgiving nature make it a worthy investment. If you’re looking for a razor that combines craftsmanship with a superior shaving experience, the Feather AS-D2 is well worth considering.
